Salamanca transport: getting there and getting around
Below we explain how to get to Salamanca from the airport and the best ways to get around the city itself.
Getting to Salamanca
Salamanca’s own airport is very small and only takes national flights. Students therefore fly into Madrid-Barajas airport (international flights arrive at Terminals 1 or 4), which is located at approximately 215km away from Salamanca. From there, Salamanca can be reached by bus, train or taxi.
1. Bus
This is the easiest option, since a bus can be taken directly from the airport itself.
Average time: 2 hours 45 mins
Cost: €30 one-way or €55 return
Buses are available from 9 am to 11.15pm on weekdays and between 1pm and 9.15pm on weekends.
Visit www.avanzabus.com for timetables and bookings.
2. Train
In order to catch a train, you must make your way to the Estación de Chamartín- you can get there either by metro or by taxi.
Average time: 2.5-3 hours
Cost: €30 one-way or €60 return
Trains run between 8.45am and 9.30pm.
See www.renfe.com for timetables and bookings.
3. Taxi
An average taxi from the airport to Salamanca will cost upwards of €200 and since it is so far, some taxi drivers may refuse to take you. Therefore, we highly recommend taking public transport.
Getting around Salamanca itself
- Salamanca is a small city: walking from one side to the other only takes around half an hour.
- Due to its small size, all facilities, shops and attractions are located close together and therefore walking is a good idea.
- Most of the town centre is pedestrianised, making it easy to amble around, take in the sights and soak up the atmosphere.
Buses
- Salamanca has its own bus network, with a total of 13 bus lines which run during the day between the hours of 7.15am and 11.45pm.
- There are also night buses, which run from 11.30pm until 3am (or 4am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
- One journey costs €2, but you can also purchase a bus card for a set amount of journeys, which works out cheaper.
Taxis
Taxis are generally inexpensive- expect to pay around €5-15 to get from one side of town to the other.
Station info
- The bus station is located in the northwest of the town centre, on the Avenida de Filiberto Villalobos.
- Salamanca’s train station is called Vialia, and it is located in Paseo de la Estación.
